Made-To-Order Custom Jewellery

We do our best to accommodate walk-in clients. However, booking an appointment will ensure one of our designers is available to give you their undivided attention for the length of your appointment.

Appointments can be booked by phone at (780) 423-0890, or through our website. Please visit the ‘Our Team’ section of our website to see more information on our designers and their styles!

Vandenbergs is happy to work with clients in creating their dream jewellery using client supplied materials such as gold or gemstones. There is always a risk when setting gemstones that they may break or chip during setting or during removal from existing settings. Our team members will check your jewellery for obvious wear and damage and give recommendations as needed. However, anything can happen. Vandenberg’s does not take responsibility for damage if your stone is chipped or breaks during setting.

We are happy to offer a few options for you regarding your gold. We can either melt down your gold to use in your new piece or buy the gold from you to be sent to the refinery. If you would like to use the value of your gold towards an in-store purchase (either custom or an item out of our showcase), we give you 90% of the pure value of your gold. If you prefer we purchase your gold outright, we will pay you 70% of the gold value.

If you opt to use your existing gold for something new, we charge a $200 fee for the labour to separate, clean, and remove the impurities from the gold to melt it down.

The time required to finish your made-to-order jewellery can vary in length depending on a multitude of factors. Once the center stone is purchased and the design is approved, your item should be completed within approximately 4-6 weeks. This timeline is dependent upon the complexity of the design, as well as the number of jobs currently in the production queue. For instance, Christmas is a popular time for custom pieces so typically requires a longer timeframe for completion.

If your project requires a faster completion, please discuss this with your designer. We will do our very best to accommodate rush orders.

No, the process can be done remotely! We have international clients as well as clients from all over Canada. We are happy to navigate through our custom process with you, through the use of digital meetings and email.
Yes, we do! We sell a wide range of stones such as natural diamonds, lab grown diamonds, and diamond simulants such as moissanite. We’ll be happy to find the perfect fit for what you’re looking for!
Yes, we have a large selection of coloured gemstones in-house for you to select from! We carry well known stones like sapphire, ruby, emerald, and pearls as well as lesser-known gemstones like Imperial topaz, tanzanite, tourmaline, zircon, garnet, and many more! If we don’t have what you’re looking for in store, we are happy to source a new stone that perfectly fits your vision!

Repairs

We do! We are happy to size or repair jewellery whether it was purchased through us or a third party.

Our pricing depends on several factors: the type of metal, the design and width of the ring, the type and number of gemstones set in the ring, and if we’re sizing it up or down. Sizing prices start at $75 when sizing down and may increase from there.

We strive to have sizings completed within 1-2 business days. First sizings on engagement rings that we have manufactured will try to be finished within the same day they are dropped off.

All repairs are done in house by one of our full-time goldsmiths. When you drop off your jewellery, we first check it under the microscope, with you present, to see what repairs are needed. A price and an estimated timeline for completion are then provided to you.

Timelines for completion are dependent upon the availability of our goldsmiths and the complexity of the repair. Our goldsmiths may extend that timeline if the need for more repairs are discovered. In this situation, the matter will be discussed with the client prior to proceeding.

An exception to this practice will include jewellery from designer brands purchased from our showcase. Brands typically warranty their own product, so these items are shipped to their headquarters for repairs and warranty issues. Shipping and insurance charges will apply. The designer brand may issue repair fees where warranty is not applicable.

There’s no appointment necessary for repairs or maintenance checks. You can walk in anytime, and one of our team members will be happy to assist you.

Care & Cleaning

Engagement rings and wedding bands that are worn continuously receive more daily wear and tear. We recommend you bring these rings in for cleaning and inspection at least twice per year. For other items that are worn less frequently, we recommend once every 1-2 years.

However, we are happy to clean them more often! If you have an upcoming event and want your jewellery looking their best, feel free to drop by and we will inspect and clean your jewellery at no cost. We are happy to provide this service even if you didn’t purchase your jewellery from us (up to 5 items)! It only takes a few minutes and will give you peace of mind and also return that beautiful sparkle!

We are happy to add you to our automated maintenance reminder text service. All we need is your name, cell phone number, and a date (like your anniversary for example) and we will send you an automated message every 6 months to remind you to bring your jewellery in for cleaning! Please reach out to one of our team members to be added to our list.
Dust, lotions, and oils from our skin all contribute to the cloudiness and loss of sparkle in our jewellery. Regular checkups and cleanings can help maintain that sparkle as well as check on the structural integrity of your item. In between professional cleanings, you can clean your jewellery at home and it’s easy!

For most jewellery, you can use a 10:1 ratio of warm water and a mild detergent like Mr. Clean or Dawn dish soap. Use a soft bristle toothbrush (a baby toothbrush works great) to clean underneath and all around the diamonds/gemstones. Rinse with warm running water and repeat if necessary. Air dry or pat dry with a paper towel. You can also use a microfiber cloth to remove fingerprints from the tops of your diamond or gold to maintain the sparkle between cleanings.

Special care is required for pearls, opals and other porous gemstones. Don’t get these gems wet or use any chemicals or lotions on them. Instead, use a microfiber cloth to gently rub the gemstone and polish any oils away. For pearls you may also use a slightly damp cloth.

For silver jewellery, mix baking soda and water into a watery paste and gently scrub the silver to bring back the bright white colour. Avoid contact with gemstones and wash thoroughly with water afterwards. We also have silver polishing cloths and silver cleaning solutions available for purchase.

Wedding sets are intended to be worn every day. However, there are some activities where it is wise to remove your jewellery in order to protect it. Lifting heavy items, such as weights at the gym, can misshape your ring or loosen stones set along the bottom of your band. High impact activities like rock climbing or even just washing dishes can be harsh on your rings as well, so it’s better to remove jewellery when you expect it to smack against things.

It is also good practice to remove your jewellery while gardening or doing heavy duty housework or cleaning. Certain chemicals can be harsh on some gemstones, so it’s best not to find out which ones can cause a lasting impact on your rings! As for gardening, you don’t want to have to dig up your whole garden if you look down and notice your ring is missing or pack the diamond setting full of soil. Best to put it back on after you’ve finished!

Chlorine (from swimming pools and hot tubs) can react poorly with gold and cause pitting to occur. It’s best practice not to wear your jewellery in the pool. In general, it’s best not to wear them in lakes or oceans either, as your finger will shrink faster than the metal in your ring. Oftentimes, rings will slide off your finger without you even noticing.

Nothing quite loves each other more than diamonds and grease! Touching the gemstones in your rings can cause oils from your hands to transfer to your diamond and can contribute to the cloudiness and loss of sparkle from your beautiful gemstone. Instead, when you need to adjust or take your ring off and on, we recommend you touch the metal part of your ring.

Fine cultured pearls with thick nacre layers will last for generations if cared for properly. Cultured pearls should be kept free of perfumes, cosmetics, perspiration and dirt. You may gently wipe cultured pearls with a slightly damp cloth. Pearl strands are often strung on silk, either with a knot between each pearl or without. Over time, the silk will stretch, weaken, and become soiled. If you notice fraying or stretching in your pearl strand, we offer a restringing service. Contact one of our team members, and we can set up an appointment to take in your pearls.
There’s no appointment necessary for repairs or maintenance checks. You can walk in anytime, and one of our team members will be happy to assist you.

Yes, appraisals are complimentary for all jewellery manufactured by us (where we supply 100% of the item) or purchased from our showcase. Appraisals for jewellery that has been inherited, gifted, or purchased from another source can be provided for a fee of $100 per item. We estimate 1-3 weeks for completion, but this time frame may be longer, depending on the number of pieces being appraised. While with us, your item(s) remain in our safe when not being worked on and are insured through our own policy.

Appraisals are based on replacement dollar value. We define this as the cost of manufacturing or replacing the item as at the date of the appraisal. We do not add a dollar value cushion to appraisals which ensures that you won’t pay extra premiums on insured pieces. You can rest assured that you will receive a current, realistic value for your item, performed by an experienced GIA Graduate Gemologist.
